Size: 23.5mm diameter, 4.30g weight Composition: Silver Otacilia Severa was the Empress and wife of Emperor Philip I. Philip began his career in the Roman military and eventually rose through the ranks to become a general. In 244 AD, he was proclaimed emperor by his troops after the assassination of Emperor Gordian III. He was the first emperor to be born in the Roman province of Arabia, hence his nickname "the Arab." Philip's rule was marked by efforts to stabilize the Roman Empire and improve relations with the Roman Senate. He initiated public building projects and pursued diplomatic initiatives to ensure the unity of the empire. He was also known for his diplomatic correspondence with the Persian Sassanian Empire. Philip's reign faced challenges from both internal and external sources. Economic difficulties and border conflicts strained the empire's resources. Additionally, a rival claimant to the throne, Decius, eventually led a rebellion against Philip. In 249 AD, Philip faced defeat in battle against Decius' forces and was subsequently killed, marking the end of his reign. His reign is often remembered as a relatively peaceful interlude between more tumultuous periods in Roman history. Interested in other ancient Greek and Roman coins?
