Very nice clean copy. 11 INTRODUCTION Lassus' collection of duos --almost certainly the finest of its kind -- appeared in many editions up to 1600, and continued to be printed well after that date. It appeared under three different titles, the shortest of-which, Motetti et Ricercari a due voci, we have adopted here. The first edition, on which the present edition is based, was published in Lassus' home town of Munich, under the somewhat cumbersome title Novae aliquot et ante hac non ita usitatae ad duos voces cantiones suavissimae, in 1577; it appears that an edition was published in the same year by Phalese in Leuven, though this copy has not survived. A year later Adrian Le Roy and Robert Ballard in Paris issued the identical music under the more concise title Moduli duarum vocum, nunquem hactemus editi. One year later still, the first of several editions to appear in Venice, all with the more satisfactory title Motetti et Ricercari a due voci, was published by Angelo Gardano; this was reprinted in 1586, the same year that a rival publisher, Giacomo Vincenti, apparently issued his own edition (now lost, though his reprint of three years later has survived). 37 pages.
