Description: This original painting is by Oregon Artist Thoman Cort Allen, Jr. Tom Allen, served (1992) for 8 months as the "Resident Artist," at Yellowstone National Park. For that reason alone, I believe this painting to be from that approximate date. Of course, those experiences may have served as memorable inspiration for paintings at a later time. The artist was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1931. He died in Corvalis, Oregon on September 1st, 2015. He was simply known as, Tom Allen. That is how he signed his many paintings. This artist was a highly educated man. He studied Botany at the University of Wisconsin, with a minor in Chemistry and English. At the University of California (Davis), he earned a PH.d., in 1956. He chose the University of California, because it was one of the very few universities (at that time) with an electron microscope. This artist became a professor at the University of Oregon, serving from 1962-1991. There he brought in an electron microscope for the study of plant diseases. He also taught drawing, watercolor, and acrylic classes at Linn-Benton Community College. This painting is obviously rich with color. It is framed well, not a new frame, but it is a very good frame. The painting is simply excellent in condition. The composition is both fun and tells a story of one of America's most beloved national parks. I believe it to be a safe guess that a part of the artist's personality is exhibited in this painting. The last photo is a photograph of the artist himself. I have provided it just for reference. He is a very, "University Professor" looking man. The artist is responsible for many art societies that he formed or participated in. Art was his passion and calling throughout his life.
