Description: CHAPLIN, CHARLES. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook for Charles Chaplin Film - A Dogs Life. Los Angeles: First National Pictures, 1918. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 12" x 18" [30 x 46 cm]; 4 pages). Fragile with some small edge nicks and tearing at the cease folds with minor age-toning. A Dog's Life, the 1918 Charlie Chaplin silent comedy ("The one and only Charles Chaplin in his first million dollar picture"; "In his first million dollar comedy"; "His Signature"; "A First National Attraction") starring Charlie Chaplin (Charles Chaplin; as the Tramp), Edna Purviance, Syd Chaplin, Henry Bergman, Charles Reisner, and Brownie the Wonder Dog (in the title role). Note that Chaplin was so incredibly popular in 1918, that First National had to pay him a million dollars per movie to lure him away from his previous studio (which was a staggering amount of money in 1918)! Naturally, they wanted to get some advertising value out of their massive expenditure, so they advertised the movie as "His First Million Dollar Comedy". Brownie the Wonder Dog got his giant break in 1918 playing the title role in this film. This led to major stardom and a series of shorts with his name above the title. He starred in 53 movies through 1923, at which point he hopefully retired at the peak of his fame!
