Description: Just out of a local smoke free house is this original vintage James Montgomery Flagg b.1886 oil painting. Not to be confused with the other more famous artist and illustrator of the same name. See bio of this artist below. The scenic landscape depicts what we believe is the Camelback Mountain of Phoenix, Arizona in a hand carved wood frame. The artist was reported to have made his own hand carved frames. It is well marked on the back with the artist's card that is noted in pencil "Camelback Mountain". The painting is also signed Flagg in the lower left of the painting. With the frame it measures about 10 1/2 inches high and about 13 1/2 inches wide. The painting and frame are in very good condition. See photos as they are part of the description. Bio; James Montgomery Flagg, the western artist, by coincidence was given the same name as the famous illustrator and artist of the Uncle Sam I Want You poster fame but was not related to him. J M Flag was born in 1886 near Old Fort Laramie Wyoming the son of a pioneer. His first effort at the age of 12 brought recognition at the Pan American Exposition of 1898. In 1905 his first official commission was to paint scenic landscape views for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. The same year at the age of 19 brought him international recognition. He spent his years painting local landscapes in and near Scottsdale Arizona where he also taught the art of painting. He was the father of the western artist Monte Flagg and the woodcarver Dee Flagg. Although there is no official biography of the artist we were able to garner the above information from several sources but we can not verify its accuracy.
