Origin Museum History The Origin Museum started as a humble computer game collection in the 1990s. Curator Joe Garrity slowly began to realize that many of his favorite games all seemed to be made by the same company. Along with his girlfriend Paula, the two began their first quest to try and find a copy of every game that Origin had ever made. Scouring yard sales and thrift shops, along with using internet newsgroups, and a new website called eBay, Joe and Paula began collecting in earnest. In 2000, they made a trip to Austin, Texas to visit their game developer heroes, establishing relationships with Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, Origin music creator George 'The Fat Man' Sanger, Crusader designer Tony Zurovec, Origin artist Denis Loubet, David 'Iolo' Watson, and others. In 2001, Joe and Paula connected with Richard Garriott, Warren Spector, and other Origin Systems developers employees, discussing the importance of preserving gaming history. Joe proposed to Paula on that second trip, and their marriage was made even more special when David 'Iolo' Watson volunteered to act as Father of the Bride at their wedding. As word spread, many Origin Systems alumni began donating games and artifacts to The Origin Museum. The collection grew, and more connections were established, including Electronic Arts and Mythic Entertainment. Joe and Paula then extended the Origin Museum's mission to tracking down elusive games and artifacts. Some of their accomplishments include: -Assisted in the validation of the discovery of the Ultima 8-Lost Vale prototype box -Participated in the (unreleased) Ultima X Odyssey event, featured in promotional videos in 2004 -Contracted the creation of the first Ultima Crossbow (originally designed for release of Ultima IX/Ultima Online in 1999) -Participated as part of the team in recovering the "Origin Archive", digitizing almost 1 terabyte of Origin Systems data -Worked with Electronic Arts to create a full display of Ultima and UO artifacts for an official UO fan gathering in 2005 -Established many Ultima and Wing Commander fan events -Recovered and archived unreleased Origin games such as Ultima Online 2 and Ultima X Odyssey -Recovered the only data and documentation available on Ultima 8-The Lost Vale -Donated artifacts to establish the University of Texas Videogame Archive Written by Joe Garrity
