Yuri Petrovich Kugach, the founding member of the academically traditional Moscow River School, was born in Suzdal, Russia. In 1931-1936 studied art in at the 1905 Moscow Art School. Graduated from Moscow Art Institute (Surikov) where he studied under Grabar and Gerasimov. In 1948 - 1951 taught painting at this Institute. In 1972 Kugach was elected to Academy of Arts.
