Description: Original signed mixed media painting by Russian artist Roman Strekalovsky. The painting dates from the 1930s and is signed at the lower right. It is an Art Deco stylized Persianate miniature and was most likely rendered as an original for a book illustration. It is a watercolor and gouache heightened with gold paint on wove paper that his been tipped to a dark blue mounting sheet. The painting measures 9 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches and aside from overall age toning, is in excellent condition. Roman Strekalovsky was a Russian artist and entomologist, he was associated with the American University in Cairo, Egypt and was also a contributor to the Encyclopaedia Iranica. In 1941 he illustrated a new edition of the Kalila wa-Demna published in Cairo and containing 13 original Persianate miniatures. The Smithsonian Institute holds in it's collection dozens of Strekalovsky watercolors of insects: https://ids.si.edu/ids/deliveryService?id=SIA-SIA2012-7847 Roman was the brother of the artist Vcevold W. Strekalovsky (1901-1990) who emigrated to the U. S. in 1937. Vcelvold was born in Petrikov, Russia (now Belarus) at the turn of the century, Roman's origins are likely similar.
