Description: Hans Burkhardt (1904-1994) was born in Switzerland but immigrated to New York in 1924. He is a well listed painter and printmaker who studied at Cooper Union and then Grand Central School where he met his mentor Arshile Gorky. Gorky was an influential artist who was pivitol in the period when surrealist artists turned to abstract expressionism. Burkhardt became Gorky's close friend and assistant and shared a studio with him. Gorky expressed that, besides himself, there were only two other noteworthy artists - de Kooning and Burkhardt. In 1937, Burkhardt moved to Los Angeles and forged the link between East coast and West coast progressive art. Burkhardt's works are in many prestigious collections including the Fine Art Museum of San Francisco; the British Museum, London; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; the Hirshorn Museum; the Guggenheim Mueseum of Art, N.Y.; the Los Angeles County Museum; and the Portland Museum of Art, Oregon. The artwork for sale was originally sold as a monoprint and was thought to be unique. A 2nd impression emerged in an auction just one year ago and now it is believed that this is an etching that was hand colored by the artist. The total edition is probably no more than 5. The artwork is signed "H. Burkhardt, 68" in brown ink at the lower right (photo 2). It is entitled "Love" in brown ink at the lower left The image between the platemarks is 10 and 1/4" by 11 and 1/2" across. The piece including the frame measures 17 and 1/2" high by 18" across. On the back of the artwork is an envelope with some paperwork from when the seller originally purchased the item in 2010.
