George Soper RE 1870 – 1942British artist, printmaker and illustrator.George Soper was born in the London Borough of Hackney on 2 May 1870, son of George Robert Soper, a horticultural sundriesman, and his wife Elizabeth Longman née Cogan. Soper was apprenticed to printer & stationer, George Sydney Waterlow and worked alongside illustrator Charles Robinson. He studied art at Ramsgate, spending the early part of his career as an illustrator and in 1905 studied etching under Sir Frank Short, after which, most of his talents were directed towards original printmaking continuing his tuition for engraving under Short at the Royal College of Art 1916-1920. His etchings are considered to be among the finest of their time, he was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy (48 works) and elected a full member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1920, with whom he exhibited 80 works. He exhibited widely at many of the principle London and provincial galleries of his day.He married Ada Lehany in 1897 and one of their two daughters was Eileen Soper, also a well-known artist and printmaker. In 1908, he built a house in Harmer Green, Welwyn, Hertfordshire, known as 'Wildings', where he lived for the rest of his life. In 1908, George Soper illustrated Charles Kingsleys 'Water Babies', the first of a number of classic gift books for Headley Brothers and the following year made colour illustrations for Mary Lamb's 'Tales from Shakespeare' going on to illustrate many more. After the ‘etching boom’ ended in the early 1930s, George was involved in a range of artistic work and often worked closely with his daughters Eileen and Eva and, like Eva, modelled Royal Worcester figures. He died at Harmer Green, Welwyn on 13 August 1942. Both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, hold examples of his etchings in their collections. The estate of George and Eileen Soper was placed in the care of Chris Beetles ltd of St James’s, London after Eileen’s death and the gallery mounted a highly successful retrospective exhibition in 1995. In the same year, they published the Catalogue Raisonne of their work.
