Description: At first glance it looks like a Native carved piece. And I can see that because its shape is in keeping with NW Coast Native Americans. But looking closer you might recognize traditional European chip carving like the cross hatching and the Sechsschnitt cuts in the dorsal, fin, and tail. The head has been left to the carver’s imagination. Although the whale’s lips are reminiscent of early Celtic human stone representations in Ireland. Overall, the design has a kind of Norwegian or Danish flair. There is a strong nod to the NW Coast NA. The carver signed his name Marcus Pederson. On the PNW coast there are several active wood carving groups sharing their knowledge and making creations. I am struck by this melding of traditions.
