Description: A very nice original example of a scarce 1910 map showing the route of the Idaho & Washington Northern Railroad which was begun by Frederick Blackwell in 1907 to provide access to the vast tracts of virgin forests he and his eastern financial backers had just recently acquired. The main line ran from Spokane, Washington, east to Grand Junction, Idaho then north along the remote Pend Orielle River in eastern Washington to Metaline Falls. In addition to operating as a freight railway, Blackwell also invested in top-of-the-line Pullman passenger coaches for daily service between Spirit Lake and Metaline Falls and the I. & W. N. quickly became known as one of the finest small railroads in the country.Although the railroad was well received and efficiently run, a deep and prolonged recession forced Blackwell to give up his controlling interest to the Milwaukee Railroad in 1914. The line is still in operation today as a freight only carrier under the Pend Oreille Valley Railroad name.Condition of this map is VG+ with light wear to fold lines, one small hole at one fold line intersection and no splits, stains or image loss noted. Please look closely at provided images to assess condition details. This map will be shipped rolled.Sheet Size: 11.75 X 17.75 inches (29.8 X 45.1 cm)Image Size: 11.5 X 17.5 inches (29.2 X 44.5 cm)
