Description: Original hand-colored engraved map of the Balkans, printed more than 170 years ago. The coverage area includes the geopolitical area previously known as Turkey in Europe, as well as adjoining territories, including present-day Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, and northern Greece. The image area measures 25.6 x 37.4 cm [10" x 14¾"], with generous margins on all sides, and there is good detail throughout, with hundreds of place names. The map was engraved by Sidney Hall, Bury Street, Bloomsbury, and was published by Adam & Charles Black in Black's General Atlas, Edinburgh, 1852. Topography is delineated in shaded relief, the distance scale is calibrated in English miles, and there are two insets: Bosphorus and Crete. Condition: It is in very good condition, clean and sound, with no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side, and a fine overall antique patina.
