The title refers to Fenelon's banishment from court for friendship with a lady, Madame Guyon, whose Quietist views were considered heretical. Despite Fenelon's protestations that he did not share such beliefs, that in combination with his publication of TELEMACHUS earned him the ire of Louis XIV. Later in life Fenelon wrote several anti-Jansenist works as well.
