Description: Original Antique Engraving - Colored Slaves Digging Grant's Canal Title: "Negros at Work on the Canal" - March, 1863 The purpose of the canal was to create a channel that would bypass the Confederate batteries at Vicksburg in the hopes that it would cause the Mississippi river to divert and leave Vicksburg high and dry and worthless as a military installation. Originally known as the Williams Canal while it was being built by General Thomas Williams, it turned out to be a disastrous project with his 3,200 troops decimated by disease and fatigue. When it became obvious that his troops would be unable to finish it, Williams gathered 1,200 slaves from nearby plantations to complete the task. That also failed and the project was abandoned. President Lincoln was keen to complete it and next, ordered General Grant to finish it. That's when it became known as Grant's Canal. A break in an upstream levee resulted in the partially dug canal to fill with water, mud and debris which put an end to Grant's efforts. Today, the partially built canal has long since been filled in and overgrown, but the project was not forgotten and the area surrounding what was to be the canal, is now part of Vicksburg Military Park and the site of the canal is identified as Grant's Canal. Excellent condition. A smaller image of the levee break in the river which caused the canal to collapse, is on the back side with some text and a small illustration titled 'Bayou Navigation' The image size of the canal diggers at work is: 11" x 9" with the full paper size: 12" x 10" ____________________________Inv.
