Description: As early as four years ago, our Press asked Mr. Zhang Qitai and Mr. Yang Zenghong from the Kunming Botany Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Mr. Feng Zhizhou, from the Yunnan Academy of Forestry Sciences, to make use of the opportunity when they went out to do field investigations to take colour photos of Chinese orchids. Their hard work laid the foundation for this album. Considering the fact that artificially bred orchids, after being isolated from their original natural environment may more or less change their features and shapes, we selected for inclusion only photos of protophytic species growing in the wild, or samples directly collected and transplanted from the wilderness. No artificially bred or progagated species were included. We believe that because of this, our album more truly presents the features of Chinese orchids. in the album there are altogether 184 colour photos of 173 species in 58 genera. In the layout we have abided by the general principle of systematic botany. i.e., floral evolution from the lower to the higher, and we have arranged orchids of the same genus in the order of the Latin alphabet so as to make it more convenient for the reader. In the book we provide professional readers with representative photos and data about Chinese orchids, but undertake no further exploration or study of the orchids themselves. We hope the book will nevertheless be of some help to them. In order not to present a barrier to general readers such as college students, art workers and floral fanciers, we discarded all professional problems and details when we compiled the book, so as to make it as simple and concise as possible. In the selection of the photos, we chose the most original and beautiful pictures, with the exception of especially rare genera and species, so that each of the pictures chosen would provide aesthetic enjoyment. The album also contains the article "The Cultivation of Orchids" by Mr. Liu Jin, which we believe will he helpful to those of our friends who love to grow orchids. In the course of compiling this album, we received much kind assistance from Mr. Li Heng, Research Fellow of the Kunming Botany Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Mr. Lang Kaiyong, Research Fellow of the Botany Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Mr. Lang has been engaged in researching botanical classification and identification for many years and is experienced in determining the genera and species of orchids. Credit for the identification of the orchids included in this album belongs to him. These two scholars also provided us with many precious photos. Here we would like to express our gratitude to them.
