Description: Currier and Ives china - I grew up with this china! My parents told me how they accumulated it piece by piece in the 1950's, as their grocery store had promotions each week. When you bought certain items or spent a certain amount, you would get the dish of the week. They accumulated enough for our family, and we used it at every meal, every day. Our family has grown, my parents are now great-grandparents, and the blue currier and ives china comes out for every meal. It has served my family well for 65+ years of constant use, and is still going strong. In case you are wondering, the Currier and Ives china offered her is not my parents' set. All of the china listed here has been used to some extent, every piece is in excellent used condition - no chips, cracks, or flaking. Each of the available pieces lists the Currier and Ives scene on it. Unlike most patterns today, the Currier and Ives scenes were each painted on certain pieces. For instance, "The Old Grist Mill" is only used on Dinner, Luncheon, and Salad Plates. A set of china will therefore have a variety of scenes on the different pieces.The scenes featured on the dishes were based on antique lithographs made by the most famous printmakers in American history, Nathaniel Currier and James Ives. The dinnerware is one of the most widely recognized and collectible dish patterns ever made. It was produced by the Royal China Company of Sebring, Ohio, between 1949 and 1986. During its 37-year history, millions of pieces were made, and all of them were decorated with scenes by Currier and Ives. The most common color was called Imperial Blue, but it was also made in pink, green, brown, gray and, for a short time, multicolor.The dishes were marketed extensively through grocery-store chains, and they could also be bought by redeeming S&H Green Stamps. Banks offered them as incentives to open new accounts, and they were even tucked away in soap boxes as freebies for a while. Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward sold the dishes by catalog, and they were also carried in a host of department stores across America.
