THIS little plate, simple as it is, is full of interest to any one who has had some acquaintance with the sea. From the two brigs in the distance, sailing on opposite tacks, to the flight of the seagulls, everything is suggestive of the ocean breezes. The streaks of cloud, the trailing smoke from the steamer, the well-filled sails of the sloops in the foreground, all testify to the existence of a pretty stiff breeze. The heaping of the water into broad, low undulations, crossed by sharper and smaller waves, shows that either a storm is coming up or has subsided; or, what seems more likely in this case, that the bottom is not very far below the surface. Probably, looking in the other direction, land would be visible. Technically considered, this is the best kind of work for beginners in etching to imitate. Everything is given by the line, and there is not a single line used that does not express something-a ripple of the water, the curvature of the sails, or a mesh of the tangled clouds. Enough color has been obtained by careful biting, in no place carried so far as to destroy the lines. With all this cleanliness of workmanship and attention to drawing, what the artist was most intent upon was the expression of the feeling that he experienced. This he has accomplished in such a manner that it is communicated to others. His work should, therefore, be satisfactory to him from every point of view. THE BASS ROCK Is etched by the same hand. It is less satisfactory, both in subject and in execution. The Bass Rock is a barren islet on the Scotch coast, impressive enough from its mass and its position to be the central point of interest in a good picture. Its lines, if very fincly drawn, might be interesting enough in themselves, but here they are incorrectly given, and the distance, the peculiar lighting which breaks it up into three nearly equal portions, and the presence all around of masses that predominate over it in size and in strength of color, rob it of all the majesty that might accrue from its bulk. In this respect it was a mistake to etch the clouds behind it with bolder lines than are used in the shaded parts of the rock itself. In the foreground, however, there is much real feeling, for the peculiar character of the shore and the appearance of transparency and of motion in the water have been very happily rendered.
