Description: Major Doar Ivri discovery - 20 mils on 'Thick White' paper: 28 Dec 1948 postmarked local TEL AVIV registered cover franked 40 mils at the DO-2 period postage rate (15m letter + 25m registry fee) using a right marginal horizontal pair of 20 mils Doar Ivri stamps with control number 29203 & edge of 'slug' control symbol - per Bale belonging to plate group Ba126.1 (plate block catalogues at $1500) & tied by 2x full strikes of 10th Macabbi Congress machine slogan cancellation (Nacht #3, on 3rd day of use; in used only between 26-31 Dec.) on front + 1x on back; affixed with Mandate registry-label Sacher-R14A for TEL AVIV-14 + the Mandatory PT512 'Certificate of Posting' slip affixed to the front, handstamped in Hebrew "State of Israel - Temporary Form" & tied by same day TEL AVIV-21 postmark. Slit open at top, very fine. Of significance is the paper type of the stamps: Bale (supported by research in Tsachor-Rothman and Shabtai) assigns the control number to a batch of 400 sheets listed as being printed on "transparent paper" (print setting B1b on 1st issue of Plate 1 of August 1948) - but the paper in use here is not "transparent paper" nor "medium white" paper but rather "thick white" paper; indeed there is no record in the specialist listerature of the 20 mils stamp being printed on "thick white" paper at all. The stamp exhibits the observed fibrous surface of the "thick white" and "thin white" paper, though here the paper is thick ("medium white" paper looks homogeneous like cast plaster, with virtually no surface anomalies - akin to the 'woven paper' Mandate pictorial stamps of the 1940s). These are presently the only known 20 mils Doar Ivri stamps on "Thick White" paper. A preliminary version of this cataloguer's groundbreaking research is published here; the final edition will be published in the forthcoming JerusalemStamps Bulletin #4.
