Description: 1976 Trinidad & Tobago $100 Commemorative Gold Coin. Issued by the US Franklin Mint to commemorate Trinidad & Tobago's new status as a Republic. Lovely perhaps as a gift for someone with a connection to Trinidad who was born in 1976. But in these troubling times, perhaps also a small investment in gold. Contains 6.21 grams of 500/1000 fine gold minted in limited edition by the Franklin Mint. Diameter is 26mm.Numista Rarity index: 83 (so it's pretty rare - see numista.com for an explanation)Bullion value: GBP 208.22 (also from numista.com - last checked 20/10/2024). Write up from the Franklin mint states: "The 1976 One Hundred Dollar Gold Coin of Trinidad and Tobago is the first gold coin ever to be issued by that nation. Moreover, this historic gold coin commemorates the new state of Trinidad and Tobago as Republic. Governed as a British colony until 1962, when it achieved its independence, Trinidad and Tobago became a republic on Aug 1, 1976.""The obverse bears a sculptured study of two scarlet ibises in flight, coupled with the national motto: "Together we aspire... together we achieve." The scarlet ibis, which is native to Trinidad and Tobago is that country's national bird.""The reverse bears the historic new legend "Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the official coat of arms. This fascinating new emblem combines natural and historic themes with heraldic symbols. The upper portion of the shield displays two beautiful hummingbirds, native to the islands, while the lower portion portrays the sailing vessels of Christopher Columbus, who discovered Trinidad and Tobago. Above the shield is a "queen's helmet", topped with a helmsman's wheel and a small palm tree." Unfortunately there is no fancy case, you just get the coin and the green cardboard setting it comes in as seen in the photo. but I shall wrap it carefully!
