Description: "Olives on the Apple Tree" by Guido D'Agostino. Part of the Arno Press Series called "The Italian American Experience". 1975 Arno Press, reprint of 1940 Doubleday, Doran first edition. Apparent first edition thus - no other edition or printing detail on reprint's copyright page. ISBN 0405063970. 316 pages, including a listing of all volumes in "The Italian American Experience" series. Hardcover, with no dust jacket, likely as issued (other books in the series available on eBay also have no dust jackets). The author has signed and dated this book on the half title page. The inscription reads: "3/14/83 / For Dr. Gus Martinucci / The friend of my friend Bill Tuft. / Mindful always of that Mediteranean heritage which / binds us all with more than / name alone / Sincerely / Guido D'Agostino". The single slashes represent the start of a new line of the inscription as written. Guido D'Agostino was a writer of novels and short stories. He was born in 1910 and lived in New York and Pennsylvania. He passed away, as best I can tell through findagrave.com, in 1999. The inscription is to a Dr. Martinucci. He passed away in 2023 and this book was found in his estate sale. There is a business card laid in that also relates. The card is for William Tuft of the Nato Insurance Center in Peoria, Illinois. This must be the person referenced in the inscription. The book is rare, especially in a signed state. The Arno Press reprints were made for sale to libraries, so this is one of the rare ones that has no library markings. Photos are of the actual book on offer. See the photos for additional insight into content and condition of this classic tale of Italian Americans from before WW2.
