PRINT DESCRIPTION : We have here another of those natural and life-like, yet repulsive scenes, which a large number of the Dutch masters, who seem to have sought subjects for their pencils among the lowest dregs of society, delighted in representing. In a wretched hovel, surrounded by all the signs and tokens of the most abject poverty, four men are intently engaged at cards, one of whom wears the dress of a monk. Notwithstanding the unclerical nature of his amusement, the expression of openness and simplicity visible in the countenance of the reverend father, contrasts favorably enough with those of the other two gamesters, whose features are visible, and who if there be any truth in physiognomy, have the air of a couple of arrant knaves. In fact were it not for the vow of poverty, which the wisdom of the church has imposed upon persons of his sacred garb and calling, we might suppose that the good pastor had fallen among thieves, and that his sinister looking companions were engaged in a conspiracy to strip him of his last stiver. A still more pleasing contrast is afforded by the innocent and prepossessing features of a young female, whose head is visible in the background, and who appears to watch the progress of the game, with some interest. As in many other pictures of this class, the beauty of the colouring, and the powerful, yet subdued chiaro'scuro, redeem the faults of conception, and more than compensate for the disagreeable nature of the subject.
