Description: Auction description Old Master Print 1785 after J.B. Huet: Nymphs, Satyrs, & the Game of Love, Color From a recent Paris auction comes this excellent, late 18th century colored print on chainlined, watermarked paper, based on a work by the Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811). It's summer! Scantily-clad young ladies and winged cherubs are lounging around after their dance with a salty satyr (tambourine, lower left). The girl just right of center is sacrificing to a herm, a representation of lusty love. It's a charming work, and a lighthearted celebration of life. This paintstakingly-produced aquatint print was made by a wonderful craftsman, Gilles Demarteau (1722-1776), who signs lower right. His works were very popular in their day and are still sought after by collectors. Recent auction results for Demarteau include an engraving sold for about $600 (Paris, June 2020); a pair of engravings for about $250 (Italy, 2015); a set of four prints for about $600 (Paris, 2015). Dimensions of this one (plate size) are about 8.5 inches by 11 inches, matted out to about 12.25 inches by 14.5 inches. The old paper has toned, and there is just a little surface grime on the custom mat, which, however, remains quite serviceable. The work was made, according to the engraver's sign lower right, in 1785. Condition overall is good and appealing. Priced very reasonably for an authentic, 239 year old work by these sought-after Old Masters. Shipping within the U.S. will be $12. And to see what else I have for sale, please click here.
