Description: A California Plein Air, Impressionist oil painting on canvas, in a period Arts and Crafts, carved, gilt redwood frame (please see photos), circa 1920. The painting is a landscape depicting the high country in eastern San Diego County, California, United States. The painting is approximately 18 inches high by 25 inches wide, it is framed and with the frame it is approximately 22 inches high by 29 inches wide. The painting appears to be unsigned, but it has the palette and brush stroke style of Point Loma, California, Plein Air, Impressionist artist Maurice Braun. Maurice Braun was a major part of the California Impressionist, Plein Air movement in the early 20th century, who lived in the Point Loma area of San Diego, California. He was very involved and well known in the Southern California art circles of the time. He had many students over the years and would often take them on painting trips in the local back country. Being located here in San Diego County, I have handled and closely observed many Maurice Braun's works over years. This piece does have the exact same palette and brush stroke style of Maurice Braun, but I do not want to rule out the possibility of a premier student of the artist, who has so fully and completely obtained the teachers skills so as to be able to emulate his work with such complete exacting precision. Over the years I have closely examined very many works by known students of Maurice Braun. But I have never before seen a piece, by one of the artist's students, that so totally captures the aspects and nuances of Maurice Braun's palette and applied brush stroke styles for varied effects, as is found in this oil painting (please see photos). The piece does appear to have an older repair in the canvas, as there is a very small canvas patch on the back (please see photos). The area on the front side of the patch does not appear to have any obvious paint loss which was filled in, so if that was done it was done in a very expert manner, so as not to be readily apparent to the eye. There is some minimal paint cracking in the piece with the worse area being in the upper left corner (please see photos). Also there is a small chip loss of paint in the lower right corner, which only goes down to a lower level of applied paint and not all the way to the bare canvas (please see photos). This piece could use a professional cleaning as there is a bit of dirt build up in certain areas (please see photos). The frame also has some conditional issues with what appears to be years of foreign matter build up (please see photos), areas of gilt loss (please see photos), some minor nicks and some very slight separation in a couple of the corners (please see photos). Please see all photos as they are a major part of this items conditional description.
