Description: Old French Miniature Santons Figurines,Christmas Nativity Set from Provence, Creche, 11 pcs This charming old Nativity set from Provence is made up of ten terra cotta and chalkware santons and a Baby Jesus in wax. The set includes the Holy Family, six characters from the traditional Provençal village (the Man with pumpkin, the Shepherd with lamb on his shoulders, the Woman on a donkey, the Miller, the Milkmaid, the Woman with a cooking pot), an ox and a sheep. Joseph is holding a fleur de lys and a lantern. One piece is signed “M. Carbonel”, the mark of Marcel Carbonel (1911-2003), one of the most famous names in hand crafted santons in Provence. The Carbonel family established their workshop in the 1930's and it is still in existence. Two pieces are stamped on the bottom with an unidentified maker’s mark. Due to their great age, these santons show signs of wear and chips, especially the Baby Jesus.
