Description: This is an old receipt, dated 1882, is for a payment made to the Old Colony Railroad Company, which operated in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The payment was made by Staples and Phillips, a shipping company. There are several signatures on this document. One appears on the left side of the document, and is signed in the middle of an inkstamp by a man named J. R. Kendrick. James R. Kendrick (1833-1896) was the Superintendent of the Old Colony Railroad Company. Kendrick had previously worked for the Sullivan Railroad, and had been the General Superintendent of the Concord Railroad. The receipt is signed by at the bottom right corner by agent Lewis Williams. The receipt is also signed by a man named S. C. Putnam. This was Sidney C. Putnam (1820-1892), who worked for the Old Colony railroad for about twenty years. Please see the scans for more details.
