TIBET. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Meditating Laughing Buddha 'Hotei': Title: Antique Chinese Qing Dynasty Inlaid Bronze Figure of the Buddha Monk ‘Hotei’. 18th C. Overview: An exquisite 18th century bronze sculpture in the form of a ‘Hotei’ monk, commonly known as a jovial Happy Buddha, beautifully rendered in an exalted profile, intricately carved, measuring 12.0 inches(30.48cm) in height. Tradition relates him to a Chinese Monk called ‘Pu Tai’, who because of his benevolent nature came to be regarded as an incarnation of the bodhisattva (the future Buddha) Maitreya, but whose large protruding stomach led to his being caricatured as the "Laughing Buddha." Description: He is portrayed with a large exposed belly seated in the meditative mudra, leaning on a bag of happiness, with a joyful facial expression, holding a string of Rosary beads in one hand, while the other hand holds a gold plinth. The Hotei is sculpted with a shaven head and elongated earlobes resting on his shoulders, wearing an intricately patterned floral inlaid robe, looped beneath a fat belly. xxxx The surface of the bronze alloy is richly patinaed in a chestnut brown. The overall robe is beautifully ornamented with a gold-inlaid floral design and monogrammed in the same manner with circular animal seals. The back of the sculpture bears the six-character mark and reign period of emperor Qianlong (1736-1795) Qing Dynasty. The Laughing Buddha is a symbol of happiness, wealth, and innocent contentment, believed to bring much luck by rubbing the head or belly of the Buddha statue. Origin:xxxxxxxxx Temple District, China.
