Circa 1878. It is a beautiful Japonisme (Japanese taste) piece that embodies the unique art of Japan, which was an unknown country at the time. Baccarat of this period drew inspiration for its work from Japanese crafts. The base is a mix of transparent and opalescent glass, over which the insects are enameled and the snake and base are painted in gold, creating a very three-dimensional finish with clearly visible irregularities. This Art Nouveau period piece requires a high level of skill and sense of gravure. The bottom of the piece is marked "BACCARAT," as is typical of Baccarat pieces of the period. The opalescent glass piece is especially precious among Old Baccarat pieces.
