Oconto County City WI History of Northern Wisconsin Biographies + WPA Guide new

Description: Oconto & Forest Counties, WI ...when mink was $2.00 a pelt New! 25 Page Booklet Early days in Oconto County (and Forest County*), WI, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this meaty 8 1/2" x 11" spiral-bound 25-page booklet, printed single-sided on 60 # opaque paper. The front cover is a parchtex card stock, protected with a vinyl sheet. The information comes from a rare 1881 book, entitled History of Northern Wisconsin and from the 1941 WPA book, entitled Wisconsin, a Guide to the Badger State. We've enlarged the area on a map from the original book, and included it along with two other maps of historic interest. *Forest County was taken from Oconto County in 1885. Communities currently listed for this area by the National Association of Counties include: Oconto County: Abrams, Armstrong, Bagley, Brazeau, Breed, Chase, Doty, Gillett, How, Krakow, Lakewood, Lena, Little River, Little Suamico, Maple Valley, Morgan, Mountain, Oconto (County Seat), Oconto Falls, Pensaukee, Pulcifer, Riverview, Sobieski, Spruce, Stiles, Suring, Townsend, and Underhill; Forest County: Alvin, Argonne, Armstrong Creek, Blackwell, Caswell, Cavour, Crandon (County Seat), Freedom, Hiles, Laona, Lincoln, Nashville, Newald, Popple River, Ross, Wabeno. (Some towns are not be mentioned in the booklet.) This booklet now includes a newly added 8-page excerpt from the WPA book. Although perhaps out of date as a tour book, these WPA guides are rich in history and trivia. Among the many subjects included are: Location and Natural Resources; Boundary changes; Railroads; Daniel Hubbard and other early settlers; Oconto in 1859; County officials in 1881; Oconto in the Civil War; Newspapers; Churches; a full page view of Oconto; Large lumber mills --The Oconto Company and Holt & Balcom -- and smaller companies; Fire at a sawmill; Villages outside of Oconto; and other interesting bits of history and trivia. Attention Genealogists: This booklet contains biographies of many county residents of the late 1800s. Some of these are brief, but others include family members, affiliations, war records, and business activities, in the course of which they often shed light on area businesses, churches, professions and institutions, and on news events. Those listed are: Dr. Hamilton Allen, Hiram Allen, B. Arnold, Enoc W. Barker, George A. Baldwin, W.E. Barlow, James Bellew, George Beyer (pix), O.W. Bloch, John I.
