Description: Frank, Waldo. (1889-1967). American novelist and "New Yorker" writer. AUTOGRAPH LETTER TO EDUCATOR HAROLD RUGG SIGNED BY AMERICAN NOVELIST AND NEW YORKER WRITER WALDO FRANK ABOUT FRANK'S NEW NOVEL. Truro, MA: 4 September, 1946. Two-paragraph letter penned in black ink and filling most of a cream-colored 3-1/2 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of letterhead with Frank's name printed in the top left corner. Signed "Ever your friend / Waldo". The bottom edge is very lightly creased & the right edge is slightly darkened. Very good. Frank writes to Harold Rugg of Columbia University's Teacher's College about his new novel: "Too long the silences between us! How are you? - and where? - and what are you doing? My novel will be out soon - I've sent you a copy to Teacher's College: I hope it reaches you. I shall await eagerly your judgment of it." Waldo Frank [1889-1967] was an American novelist, historian, political activist and literary critic. He wrote extensively for The New Yorker and The New Republic during the 1920s and 1930s. He is best known for his studies of Spanish and Latin American literature and culture and his work is regarded as an intellectual bridge between the two continents. Harold Rugg [1886-1981] was an educational reformer associated with the Progressive education movement. Originally trained in civil engineering, he went on to study psychology, sociology and education at the University of Illinois. After teaching at the University of Chicago from 1915 to 1920, he took a job at the Columbia University Teacher's College where he stayed until he retired in 1951.
