Volume 4 deals principally with the sugar cane growing and manufacturing operations on the islands. Volumes seven and eight deal principally with Martinique, Guadalupe, Barbados and Granada. Volume 7 with a number of chapters on native trees. 8 single page plates and 4 folding plates in volume 4, 533pp. . Sabin 38412 ("This edition is greatly augmented") volume 7: 2 plates, 1 folding map, ,vi, 516pp; vol 8: iv, 437, (7)pp. 10 single page plates, 4 folding plates and a map in the three volumes. Labat was a French missionary and scientist appointed to examine the sugar plantations in the French carribbean and reported back and suggested improvements. He was also an amateur naturalist and mathematician. This set puslished first as 6 volumes and then expanded to 8 with this edition, was hugely popular at the time.
