Description: Northwest Passage 1940 Film Concept Art (Drawings on recto & verso) King Vidor Northwest Passage 1940 Film Concept Art (Drawings on recto & verso) King Vidor Click images to enlarge Description (Northwest Passage) Original graphite on board concept artwork for a scene in the 1940 movie Northwest Passage starring Spencer Tracy and directed by King Vidor, about 7 by 9 ½ inches, matted in a 14 by 18 inch frame under glass, in excellent condition in a very good frame. I took the drawing out of the frame and found that a fixative was applied to the graphite so it will not smear. Also there are small flecks of white paint on the two lanterns in the picture, giving it the feeling they are lit. Finally, the glue holding the drawing to the matte has lost its sticking power and the drawing is no longer glued to the matte. As an unexpected reward for this happenstance, there is a drawing on the back showing a fort surrounded by an Indian grouping of teepees and canoes. I have not reglued the piece so the drawing is not stable in the frame and sometimes moves in and out of the space where it can be viewed. The drawing is not signed. Cedric Gibbons was the art director and Malcolm Brown was the associate art director. It is possible that either one of these important art directors was the artist but MGM also employed a stable of artists who worked on many films but never received on screen credit for their work.
