Description: 11" L x 7" W x 5" H (without handles) Makah basket woven using bear grass and cedar bark, depicting whaling scene (canoes and whales) and eagles, beaded rim and base, plaited bottom. Lined with black cotton (?) baffle bag. Two circular handles are stitched in. This basket was woven by members of the Makah/Nootka Tribe. The Makah people live on the Pacific Northwest Coast, within Washington state. This tribe is traditionally known for their whaling practices, but many Makah people were also expert weavers.
