Description: Presenting a very unusual Mussel rattle with extraordinary carving and adornment. For sale is a Northwest Coast carved and painted mussel rattle. This rattle is adorned with horse hair along the bottom and rabbit fur on the handle. The rattle is surrounded by braided, dyed rope. Although I am unable to find a signature I can say with confidence that this is the work of Bill Wilson. Bill Wilson (1944-), native name Hemas Kla-Lee-Lee-Kla is from the Kwagiulth tribe. Bill is a hereditary chief, politician, administrator and artist. His mother was the eldest child of a hereditary chief who was also a hamatsa, a position of very high stature in Kwagiulth culture. Rattles are percussive instruments used in shamanic & ceremonial contexts. This rattle is 15" L X 5 1/2" W and in very good condition. This mussel rattle is really a one of a kind piece and would be a great addition to any native art collection. I have been selling authentic Northwest Coast Art on ebay since 1999 so buy with confidence. Thank you for looking and please browse our store as new art is added often.
