Description: a kaftan-like robe (pull over head with wide open sleeves, given to in-law as gift to honor him as a tribal member. Embroidery at neckline, blue / white midweight cotton, hand-sewn, along with Kufi hat in multi-colors / fabric lining. Nigeria 1980s. There are a couple of small rusty-colored spots / stains. The recipient writes the following: "As a white man I was a rare honoree to be inducted into the Marghee Tribe, the tribe in which we lived near the town of Lassa in northeastern Nigeria. I was given robe and cap and dressed in them in a special ceremony. I wore it occasionally when we visited and/or had official dealings with local people. I was treated with extreme courtesy whenever I wore it by everyone, from children up to elders because blue -- like royal purple elsewhere -- is worn only by 'special men.'"
