Some of the original shell (the dark material) has managed to survive these hundreds of millions of years. There is even the remnant of mother-of-pearl in one area. The rest has been chipped off over time, exposing the insides of the ammonite, the chambers, etc. that used to lie protected under the shell. Some of the shell was replaced during fossilization with an iron compound, likely hematite. The specimen is about 3.4 inches across, at the longest measurement. Finally, a COA, without a photo of the exact specimen on the COA itself, is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral.
