Description: NGC F FINE Antoninianus of Trebonianus Gallus AD251-253 In June 251, Decius and his co-emperor and son Herennius Etruscus died in the Battle of Abrittus against the Goths. Rumors suggested Gallus' involvement, but the soldiers proclaimed Gallus emperor despite Hostilianus, Decius' surviving son, ascending the throne in Rome. To avoid civil war, Gallus accepted Hostilian as co-emperor.Seeking stability, Gallus made peace with the Goths, allowing them to leave with captives and plunder, and receiving an annual subsidy. In Rome, his proclamation was confirmed by the Senate, with son Volusian appointed Caesar. Decius was deified in June 251, but Hostilian's fate is unclear—he may have died from a plague by November. With displeasure growing among the army, Aemilian was proclaimed emperor. Gallus, facing a threat, prepared for a fight, recalling legions and reinforcing from Gaul. Aemilian caught Gallus at Interamna (modern Terni), leading to conflicting reports—some say Gallus and Volusian were murdered by their own troops after defeat, while others claim Gallus never faced Aemilian, as his army joined the usurper.
