Description: Welcome to my listing for a book that's a scarce historical artifact of a dark moment in American business history. This book, New York Stock Exchange Year Book 1929-1930, is a pocket-size hardcover published by the Stock Exchange itself, to provide key information and dry historical statistics on the organization. Since this book was published in 1930, it does refer -- extremely obliquely -- to the Wall Street Crash of 1929. The Crash is not specifically referred to, but can be detected in some of the statistics, such as the alarming series of early closures in November 1929 (see Photo 6) or the notation that on October 29, 1929, there was a "record volume of stock shares traded" as the market collapsed (see Photo 7.) The book measures just over 5 inches by 7 inches and is 156 pages long. Although this is an ex-library book, it is in good condition with only a few signs of that status: several "WITHDRAWN" rubber-stampings inside, an adhesive mark left on a page by removal of a checkout slip, and a call-number written on the spine in white ink. Otherwise, the text pages are unmarked, and the binding is square and solid, with light edgewear to boards. The fold-out map of the Exchange floor is still attached in the rear of the book. An unusual historical memento, and a reminder that "what goes up, must come down."
