When the Braniff lettering on the fuselage was originally introduced in dark blue, it was difficult to read in poor lighting conditions. The color was lightened somewhat and officially introduced as "Solid New Dark Blue" in 1967. Compared to the many strong colors on other Braniff aircraft, the "New Dark Blue" was considered too "subtle" and "colorless" and was only used on ten aircraft, including this 727-200.
