Much of the film's location shooting was in Big Pine, California and in the Alabama Hills of Lone Pine, California. Big Pine is in Owens Valley between the Sierra Nevada and the White Mountains and Lone Pine is about an hour away and has been called "The Gateway to Death Valley." The film's working titles were "The Persuader" and "The Difference." Tagline: When was the last time you invited death into your car? The film was directed by actress-turned director Ida Lupino, and actor William Talman is best remembered for his long-running role as D.A. Hamilton Burger in the popular American classic "Perry Mason" law drama TV series, appearing in 225 episodes from 1957-1966. Talman's chilling performance as sociopathic hitchhiker Emmett Myers in this little-known, unconventional 1950's film noir gem is brilliant. DVD's front cover has accidentally omitted the hyphen in the film's title and also misspelled actor William Talman's last name (it is spelled correctly on the back). Brief synopsis, via IMDb: Two friends on a fishing trip pick up a stranded motorist who turns out to be a psychopathic escaped convict. This sociopath has already murdered other Good Samaritans in his efforts to evade authorities. He sadistically taunts and threatens the two men and perversely delights in telling them that he has them both marked for death sometime before the end of the trip. His destination is a ferry boat in Baja, California, which he hopes will help him get to the mainland. The hostages hope to stay alive long enough to escape or be rescued by Mexican authorities. The USA's National Film Preservation Board selected this film in 1998 to add to the National Film Registry; the National Film Registry selects 25 films each year showcasing the range and diversity of American film heritage to increase awareness for its preservation. Summary from the DVD case's back cover: Two carefree young travelers make the mistake of their lives when they pick up a mysterious and slightly psychotic hitchhiker, who never closes his right eye - even when he sleeps. THE HITCHHIKER is a film noir thriller and is one of director Ida Lupino's finest moments. I happily combine multiple items for shipping.
