Identification This painting is by the listed, award-winning artist, Hans Skalagard (1923/1924 - 2017). This piece depicts the Juan Sebastian de Elcano. The handwritten notations verso say, "Spanish Navy School Ship Juan Sespastin Elcano" (the name of the ship was incorrectly spelled). Per Wikipedia, the ship was named after the Spanish explorer Juan Sebastian Elcano, who completed the first circumnavigation of the world; he was the captain of Ferdinand Magellan's last exploratory fleet. The ship is a four-masted topsail steel-hulled barquetine schooner barque which is the third largest tall ship in the world, and it has sailed more than 2,000,000 nautical miles in its lifetime, making it the sailing vessel that has sailed the furthest. It was built in 1927. The painting is not dated, so the exact age is not known. Per askART, Hans Skalagard is known for his historically accurate depictions of of nautical subjects. The artist was born on the isle of Skuo in Denmark's Faroe Islands. He was interested in painting as a child. As a teen, he became an apprentice seaman on a four-masted barque. During his life, he spent more than thirty years at sea, surviving four shipwrecks. Skalagard studied art at Denmark's Royal Academy and was taught by the marine artist, Anton Otto Fisher. Skalagard moved to the United States in 1943, becoming an American citizen in 1955. He owned a gallery in Carmel, California. Condition This unframed piece looks very good overall, as shown. It has light edge wear, from previous framing. There are some small spots of soiling/residue on the painting. The back side is as shown, with some losses to the white paper surface. The top edge is slightly irregular, from the canvas board being trimmed down by the artist. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying.
