Description: With Boeing 727 service Norfolk, Virginia’s largest city, received its first pure jet service on February 15, 1965. The city had been served by prop-jet aircraft since July 25, 1955. National Airlines’ service was only northbound to New York.No cachet was provided for the inaugural mail. This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 31 jet flight from Norfolk, Virginia to New York (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Jet Age Flights section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as J-997.Bob Haring, a former Editor-in-Chief of The American Air Mail Catalogue, prepared the cover.After offers from several other airlines, Pan American World Airways proposed to merge with National Airlines in August 1978. Formal agreement was reached by the two carriers one month later. Almost one year later the Civil Aeronautics Board gave tentative approval and, in October 1979, sent its order to President Carter. On December 22, 1979, the President approved the merger, and on January 7, 1980, Pan American became the owner of all remaining National Airlines stock. Complete operational merger of the two airlines did not occur until late in 1980.
