Shortly after the Navy was looking for volunteers to test a pressure breathing mask, which he did. He became the Navy's only civilian employee as a physiological aide. As he would put it he's a happy human guinea pig. He was one of the first three Americans to ride the ejection seat. He chalked up over 150 test rides on the ejection seat. He has gone through almost the same amount of test on the Navy's anti-exposure or survival suit (space suit). He once sat in an ice-filled tank in this suit until frost grew thickly on his eyelashes.
