On her second mission, she became first female commander of the ISS with Expedition 16. In 2009, she became the first woman to serve as NASA's Chief Astronaut, the most senior position in the NASA Astronaut Corps. In 2017, Whitson became the first female astronaut to command the International Space Station twice, and broke the record for the longest single space flight by a woman at 289 days in orbit before returning aboard Soyuz MS-04. This record was broken by Christina Koch's flight, which lasted 328 days.Whitson holds the records for the oldest woman spacewalker and the record for total spacewalks by a woman.Whitson's cumulative EVA time is 60 hours, 21 minutes, which places her in 5th place for total EVA time. She later became a consultant for Axiom Space and has been selected to be commander of Axiom Mission 2. Soyuz MS-03 was Soyuz spaceflight launched on 17 November 2016. It transported three members of the Expedition 50 crew to ISS. Soyuz MS-03 was the 132nd flight of a Soyuz spacecraft. The crew consisted of a Russian commander cosmonaut Oleg Novitsky, NASA American astronaut P. Whitson and ESA French astronaut T. Pesquet. Soyuz MS-03 docked at the International Space Station on 19 November 2016. On 2 June 2017, Soyuz MS-03 undocked from the ISS, carrying Oleg Novistky and Thomas Pesquet back to Earth after 196 days in space. Whitson remained on the ISS and returned on Soyuz MS-04 on 3 September 2017.
