In the case of an iron kettle, three of these are necessary. These are rotated to make the mold. In most cases, a "Nakago," which is one size smaller than the wooden mold, is also made. This is to open a cavity in the iron kettle. The wooden mold is used to make a mold. The wooden mold is placed in an outer frame called a sanegata and filled with river sand or clay, and then rotated to form the shape. This is called "katahiki.
