Description: Antique "MZ Austria" (Moritz Zdekauer-Altrohlau) Gilded Floral Porcelain 9" Vegetable Serving Bowl. Measurements: This large bowl measures 9-3/4" in Width x 2-7/8" in Height. Pattern Description: Pink & Green Floral Swag, Pink Rose Cluster in Center, One Inch Wide Gold Band with Red Scrolls and Blue and White Flowers, Scalloped Edge. Made in Austria. Company History (credits to The Old Stuff website): "The Stara Role (Altrohlau) pottery works were established in 1810 by Benedict Haßlacher. The manufacture was bought by Augustin Novotny in 1824. Under his management employment rose to 100 workers. He also established three warehouses in Prague, Vienna and Pest. In 1836 Novotny started manufacturing porcelain. The factory production was constantly rising. In 1870 it employed 800 workers." In 1884 the company and works were bought at auction by Moritz Zdekauer Bank. From that date forward, the MZ Austria marks were used on the porcelain made at this factory. "The company exported products to North and South Americas and the Dutch colonies. In 1909 the firm was bought by C.M. Hutschenreuther and since then was used a MZ Altrolau mark. The Altrohlau Porcelain Factories operated till 1945, when it was nationalized. The company still operates in the Czech Republic under the name Starorolsky Porcelan Moritz Zdekauer in the town Stara Role near Karlovy Vary." Maker's Marks: This bowl has a printed dark green "MZ Austria" Two-Headed Eagle mark that was used from ca. 1884 until 1909. After 1909, many of the M.Z. pottery marks state "Altrohlau" or "Czechoslovakia", or even both, and more recently "Czech Republic" after 1992. The Austria mark was the first mark used by Moritz Zdekauer after their acquisition in 1884. In addition to the two-headed eagle mark, there is a hand written Number "8535." and an impressed mark that appears to be "1000" with the number "2" underneath and sideways. It is possible that "1000" represents the pattern or the shape of the piece. See photos. Condition: Excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. Light shelf wear and other signs of light use may be present. See photos.
