Description: This is a beautifully woven antique spruce root Tlingit footed pot with a spruce-root woven handle. It was originally part of the famous Spickett collection in Juneau of late 19th Century and early 20th Century woven basketry. It is believed the handle has been detached since the time the basket was made, having been broken by the weaver and not repaired. This has been noted in other documentation to be the case and is evident when viewing the basket in the c.1915 Spickett Collection photo preserved in the Alaska State Museum. It was further documented in a 1973 appraisal. The vibrant colors are done in unique Tlingit false embroidery in the pattern known as "Shaman's hat" or "Spirit around the head". The colors display no fading whatsoever and are very bright and lively. Tlingit weavers were among the very first to use artificial dyes to prevent color fading. RIT Dye was usually what was preferred. This basket is in beautiful condition with no damage or wear shown. Even the rim shows no deterioration at all (see closeup photos). This piece comes from a collection where these beautiful baskets were highly prized and cared for. It is museum quality. This exquisite little basket measures 5 1/2" in diameter and is 4 3/4" high. It dates to about 1900.
