Description: Murrle Bennett & Co Jugendstil/Arts & Crafts Silver Brooch c. 1903-1914 A rare, highly collectible, silver brooch marked 925 and M.B &Co. for Murrle, Bennett and Co. Many of the pieces made by M.B & Co were designed by Theodor Fahrner, Wilhelm Furner and Adolf Schmid. As there are no marks that identify the designer of this piece, it helps to look for similar pieces for the purpose of identification. A brooch that is somewhat similar (shape elements and facial characteristics) to this is in the British Museum (Museum Number 1978, 1002.276) and was designed by Adolf Schmid, sculptor and medalist in 1903. The figure depicted in relief on this brooch is a woman above a swan, perhaps meant to be Leda and Swan from Greek mythology. The swan is at the bottom of the brooch. The woman has sharp features and windswept hair. The overall condition is excellent with a few minor scratches. Measurements: The weight of the brooch is 7.88gms. It’s 3cm high and 2.3cm wide. I strive to fully and accurately describe the items I list. Please be sure to carefully review all photos to confirm description and condition and ask all questions before purchase. I welcome enquiries and I’m happy to provide additional photographs. My aim is to ship all the items I sell as safely and as cost effectively as possible and normally only charge the actual cost of shipping. If there is a handling charge on this item, I’ve added it to cover specialist packing and/or the additional insurance to make sure that the item is fully covered.
