Motorola 70’s AM/FM Radio Serviced Works Good Vintage VTG

Description: Motorola 70’s AM/FM Radio Serviced Works Good Vintage VTG The radio works like new and is in used and DISAPOINTING condition. If you’d like to read my description of the work I’ve done that has restored this radio to full performance, please read on: Initial inspection: This radio came to me 1/10/2025 not working. On my initial test, I could get AM to come to life for a moment when I wiggled the band switch. No FM. There was a crack in the top which caused the back to fall off. Its battery compartment cover was missing. There was a thumb print in white paint in the center of the front. Inside, there was black electrical tape wrapped around its antenna. Otherwise… the radio was rather attractive. My policy is not to sell radios with missing parts like battery covers and I seriously considered committing it to my spare parts box. I’m familiar with Magnavox products of this era. I know the can be outstanding performers and aren’t very common… so I reconsidered. (actually, I love trying new things to save as many of these vintage radios as I can). As I pondered, I noticed that this radio has two ways to access the battery compartment. Not only a dedicated cover, but the more conventional slot that pops the entire back off. It occurred to me that I could make a replacement back cover, mount it, and the user could swap batteries by easily opening the back. As I handled it, I noticed that if the crack was closed and tight, the back stays on. Next I looked at the paint spot. I was able remove 99.9% of it, and if I didn’t tell you about it, you’d never notice. Then I closed, aligned, clamped, and sealed the crack in the top. When the plastic sealer was cured, I tested the back. Pops right on, and easily pops back off. I made a replace battery compartment cover out of sheet tin, painted it black and secured it to the inside. To repair the electronics, the band switch had a spot of dust preventing its contacts from connecting. A single drop of control cleaner fixed that, and AM came to life and worked excellent. FM was still silent. When I probed the tuners connection points, FM came alive. I then realized what was going on… the tape around the antenna was applied very neatly and at first glance could have been factory. It was not. It was added by the previous owner when the back kept falling off and pulled the wire loose at its solder connection. The wire was also now too short. With shrink wrap, I lengthened the wire and reconnected it to the circuit board. FM then worked fantastic! It is my policy to replace all the capacitors in most of the vintage radios I sell because if someone buys a radio from me, I want that radio to work like new for a long time. I replaced all seven of its capacitors. With the circuit fixed, I cleaned the cabinet inside and out. I clamped and closed the crack in the top. Next, I reinstalled the circuit board. Now for the disappointing part: I know how the crack in the top happened. The radio looks really pristine. It’s really doesn’t look like it was used much. How the crack in the top happened: Old plastic. Plastic can shrink over a long time. This radio, the glossy plastic shrank at a different rate than the type they used for the back. At some point, someone tried to close the back, and the back was too tight and “crack…”. Bummer. It can be closed, but its really tight. One needs to be exceptionally careful. Honestly… it sucks. I wanted to save this radio because it is a Magnavox… they were “High End” for their time, rather expensive, and usually rare. Radiomuseum.org doesn’t have an entry for this model. It gets loud. Volume goes smoothly from quiet to overload loud. It’s sensitive. It receives the weak test stations in my area I use to verify a radio is working properly. It is. The antenna is perfect. FM works so well, that most of the stations in my area I use to check if a radio is working properly came in with the antenna down. With the antenna up, I could tune even more stations. It’s clean. I cleaned the radio inside and out. The dial glass is transparent. It’s old. It’s got FM. It works like new. It looks pretty. It’s hard to install the battery. It has an ugly ass crack in the top. $20 bucks? : )_ Please see my photos. I service almost all the vintage radios I sell on eBay. Serviced = I clean the volume control, check the radio’s alignment, and check its current draw. I ship USPS Flat Rate. A tracking number will be provided the following business day after purchase. I will combine shipping when applicable, so please see my other cool old radios for sale. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dkr=1&iconV2Request=true&_blrs=recall_filtering&_ssn=karl-schultz&_oac=1 -karl : )_
