Description: Very captivating signed and numbered framed lithograph "Jerusalem Of Gold" by artist MOSHE BERNSTEIN in the style of pointillism. From an estate collection that had many pieces of Jewish themed art all by well-known Jewish artists. This is one of the more rare lithographs from Bernstein, and it has many biblical, Jewish shtetl life, Ashkanazi, Old Testament elements within it. There is so much detail to see in the very elaborate and intricate scenes within scenes. Quite an eye catching and thought-provoking work. Sure to be admired wherever it is hung. Some fascinating history behind the art...The woman in the artwork is someone named Naomi Shemer. Bernstein made this piece to honor her because she wrote a very important song entitled 'Jerusalem Of Gold' with a truly fascinating story behind it. Bernstein named this work after that song. It is the unofficial second anthem of Israel. Shemer wrote the song just days before the 6-day war where Israel acquired Jerusalem in 1967. This was quite a feat and the fulfillment of a 2,000 year old prophecy. That song -- 'Jerusalem Of Gold' -- led the troops into battle and was a significant inspiration for the nation to miraculously win the war. Every Arab nation was fighting against Israel, yet the war was won in just 6 days. So you can see in the piece the clear theme of music and the woman who wrote that all-important song that would be such a meaningful part of Israel's history. Framed dimensions: 23.5" wide and 33" tall.Frame is a gold tone finish and fairly ornate. Nice double matting in black with beige. In excellent condition. **CAN BE SHIPPED FRAMED OR UNFRAMED. MESSAGE ME IF YOU DON'T WANT THE FRAME OR GLASS.** Born Aug 15, 1920 Bereza, PolandDied Dec 8, 2006 Tel Aviv, Israel Moshe Bernstein was an Israeli artist. He graduated from Vilna Academy of Art in 1939. His family was wiped out in the Holocaust, but he survived the war and remained in Russia until 1947, when he attempted to immigrate illegally to the Land of Israel with Aliyah Bet. He ended up in a detention camp in Cyprus, where he remained until the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. He fought in the War of Independence. Bernstein's art focused on his memories from the shtetl. (Shtetl is a Yiddish term for small towns with predominantly Ashkenazi Jewish populations which existed in Eastern Europe before the Holocaust.) In 1999, the Massuah Institute for the Study of the Holocaust awarded him a prize for his documentation of a vanished world. He also illustrated volumes of Yiddish poetry and other books.
